New Diagnosis

Your Child Has an Autism Diagnosis. What Comes Next?

A new diagnosis can bring answers, questions and a range of emotions. You may feel relieved to better understand your child, unsure about what comes next, or both. You don’t have to figure everything out at once.

At Autism Unplugged Learning Centre, we help families make sense of their options and take manageable steps towards support that fits their child.

Start With Your Child

Your child is the same person they were before their diagnosis, with their own personality, interests and strengths. A diagnosis can help you better understand their needs, but it doesn’t tell you everything about who they are or what support will be most helpful.

Think about what is going well and where everyday life feels difficult. Communication, learning, friendships, daily routines or expressing needs may be areas you would like to explore. Your observations, and your child’s preferences and experiences, are a valuable starting point.

Take It One Step at a Time

Talk through the assessment.
Ask the professional who completed your child’s diagnostic assessment to explain the findings and recommendations. You can ask questions and request clarification whenever something is unclear.

Identify your family’s priorities.

You don’t need to address every recommendation immediately. Consider what would make the biggest difference to your child’s comfort, participation and daily life.

Explore services and funding.

Understanding which services may help, how to access them and what funding may be available can take time. We can help you sort through your options and understand the next steps.

Connect with your child’s school or childcare team.
Sharing relevant information can help the people supporting your child better understand their needs and discuss strategies together.

How Autism Unplugged Can Help

We start by listening. We want to understand your child, hear your questions and learn what matters most to your family.

Depending on your child’s needs, you may wish to explore:

  • Service Navigation & Coordination: Guidance with finding services, exploring funding, understanding application requirements and planning next steps.

  • ABA Therapy: Individualized support to develop meaningful skills for everyday life.

  • Tutoring: Support with learning gaps, academic skills and confidence.

  • Social Skills Groups: Guided opportunities to practise communication, cooperation and connecting with others.

We can also discuss whether a Developmental Profile Assessment would provide useful additional information about your child’s current skills. This is a non-diagnostic assessment; it does not replace an autism diagnosis.
